Do you mean the ducts for the HVAC?
They're on many M7s.

according to a Bombardier tech. It is an after the fact ad on to keep snow from entering the HVAC unit.

Right. I've seen some interesting Metro-North photos there in addition to Johns. :)

Are those vents on some M-7s but not others? (because sometimes I don't see them) Or do they fold down?

By the way, what is the round (cylinder) light blue thing above the left monitor in this picture? (credit to same as above for the great pics!)

All M7's on MNCR are being retrofitted with the Airduct mod.
The cylindrical light is a Blue light indicator, when a Mechanic keys in and starts work on a train all cabs have the blicking blue light in them, its vissible from outside too. The Blue light ofcourse signifies people working on or under or between cars and train is not to be moved.

Dutch, are mechnical forces still required to bring and hang a blue lantern while they work? or does this built-in blue light null that?

this replaces the blue light in cab , not the one at derail or switch.
that one still needs to be applied by the person starting work.
The nice thing is that a crew can not hop on, in middle of a train and make a split and take off.
the entire train shows blue lights in every cab. and with the L.E.D.'s used it is very visible outside the train.

Is there a reason though why the Metro-North M7s have them, but not the LIRR M7s?

Interesting. Does the blue light switch also cut propulsion power?

No its just a visual thing and its recorded on event recorder.
MNCR M7's have lots of differences with LIRR M7's
seats face other way on MNCR
MNCR has crew door for only opening the door half way.
The blue light system.
Differend Cab signal
Trucks were from beginning equipped with lateral shocks.

Seems like a good idea. I wonder why we don't have it on the LIRR.
You would think BBD would say, "Hey, MetroNorth asked for this feature. You guys want it, too?" The more commonality between the RRs, the better (and cheaper) for the manufacturer and vendors, one would think.
