Has anyone figured out who the real owner(s) of CNY actually are? Seem's that CNY is just a legal way for NS to get out of maintaning and running the southern tier, while still maitaining trackege rights to be used when they need them. It would seem to me that CNY, as a small NY state company would be a way to get tax breaks and grants from NY and Pa. to maintain the railroad that the NS wouldn't qualify for. It certainly doesn't seem that there's enough online business to begin to support all the milege involved.

The Central New York Railroad is the same CNY that was part of the Delaware Otsego System (NYS&W) in the early 1970's.
Incorperated in '73, they operated the 22 mile Ridgfield Springs Branch off the Utica / Binghamton Line.
The CNY was still around on paper all these years, even thought NYSW took over operating the branch.

It's my understanding that both CSX and NS, along with W. Rich own all the stock in NYS&W......isn't, in effect, the NS leasing the CNY to itself?

The owner of the CNYR is Walter Rich.

CNY

The original CNY is still around (on paper) but the branch to Richfield Springs was embargoed circa 1990 and torn up in 1995.

Perhaps someone should post a list of CNY's current customers on the line so we can see what they'll be doing. The current issue Railpace has a very infromative article about the tax situation for those tracks. It's really a tough call- the local communities need the revenue but the traffic on the line is pretty marginal...
