My first train ride was from Long Branch to NY Penn to go to MoMA. This was in 2005. :-D I remember sitting in a Comet IIM and I felt like I was on an airplane.

My first ever train ride was in 2002 on the tourist line in Strausburg. The next time I rode a train after that was in May of 2008 on an NJ Transit double decker from Newark Penn to NY Penn.

Yeah yeah, I was a late bloomer! It was my first time on a train and it seemed like it went pretty fast to me! I didn't really get into trains until May 25, 2006....you remember that day, right? The big NE Corridor voltage problem/disaster. I was on 2306 that day on my way to my Calc II summer class at Kean and we stopped right underneath the NEC tracks for 30 minutes until we were sent back to Bay Head. I remember that the conductor said that the train was pushing a dead electric set back to a station(I think it was Matawan) and that was wen I really became a railfan.

Doesn't this Boeing 737 interior look similar to a Comet IIM or am I the only crazy one? :P

Not even close. Resembles more of an Amfleet with the round fuselage shape.

Looks like a Multi-Level interior to me, except with less legroom and a little more headroom in the aisle.

Those aboard Amtrak coach, business, and first class seating would beg to differ.

Amtrak seats CAN be flipped, albeit in a much more involved process.

My first time on NJT was in 2003 after visiting my brother in South Orange. I took the train into the city and was hooked. I was 19 at the time and in my defence im from sj and had only taken Patco before that.

I love the fixed seats. There aren't any Ottomans on NJT and you can set up your office when you actually get there, not by flipping a six seater all for yourself.

BOT, my first ride on "NJT" was in 1975 from Newark to Roselle Park on the CNJ. Back then, courtesy of the open toilets, Track 5 was unlike all the others in Penn Station Newark!

Fantastic topic.

My first trip I can recall is from circa 1987. Ho-Ho-Kus to Suffern on Presidents Day. My father was a Hillsdale to Hoboken commuter for around 30 years, and when I was really young (early 80s) picking him up at the station was the highlight of my day (yes, I've been obsessed that long). So to actually go myself was a big thing. Actually the whole family went. Still not sure why we didn't go to Hoboken, but there absolutely nothing to do in Suffern that day, as most places were closed due to the holiday. Cars were either Comet IIs or fresh from rebuild Comet Is, as I distinctly can picture the brown seats. The conductor was super nice to an over-enthusiastic kid like me, too, making a big deal about giving me my own seat check. Gave a great impression of the profession to me.

Best thing, my dad and I still go on random rides on long weekends now, even though he's retired. Together, we've covered the whole system.
rails > roads

On second thought, let's not go to the NJ Transit Rail forum, 'tis a silly place.

At that time (1987), the Comet Is were being rebuilt by Bombardier in Barre, VT. They arrived back from Barre foreshadowing the IIBs that would come in 1988 with fixed 3-2 tan seating. The original 1982-83 Comet IIs had reversable tan seating. I can't think of other difference between the 1982 and 1988 models.

ok so scrub the JC part, I wasn't even 10 years old. Almost 48 now so I'm sure I forgot the important stuff, but my uncle worked on the Coast Line track gang for the NY & LB, and when I finally get to ride one of the trains that had so impressed me, the only thing I can remember is a toilet that emptied onto the tracks. The shame!
