SD26 (and SD39) still kicking

Guilford Rail System changed its name to Pan Am Railways in 2006. Discussion relating to the current operations of the Boston & Maine, the Maine Central, and the Springfield Terminal railroads (as well as the Delaware & Hudson while it was under Guilford control until 1988). Excellent points, Mr. Weaver. What I was getting at is that if the locomotive had in fact "blown up" -- i.e., with smoke and flames and whatnot -- it probably wouldn't have escaped the notice of the local fire department, and therefore probably would've been on the radar of the local newspaper. A crankcase explosion, on the other hand, is a bit less conspicuous.

At any rate, the 643 has been seen back on the road under its own power; the rumors of its death were indeed greatly exaggerated.

On engines under my control if and when the crankcase button tripped, IT STAYED TRIPPED and the dispatcher so notified.
I would not reset it even if I was ordered to and I was ordered to once by some goon on the Penn Central many years ago.

Both units were a little smokey, but sounded good. Here is #643 from the same day, different site:

I finally found a photo of an SD-26 with what I believe to be mid-train helper connections. I know Guilford did not use these, but it is interesting to know that some of their SD-26's had them.

Thats an AWESOME photo Mick. Nice find!

Did Guilford remove those from the units over time or did they leave them there until the unit got cut up?

Yesterday (Wed.) I noticed the 645 in Gardner at CPF 345 on the bridge over Pearson Blvd. where the gondolas have been sitting all week.

Is SD39 #690 still in service? I am seeking to preserve that unit at my museum.

Yes BM 690 that originally came from "the road of personalized service" is still in service.

Regarding the "backwards" ST to the left of the logo on the engineer's side, that's the way they painted all the SD26's at Oneonta right after Guilford bought them in 1987. Any SD26's that were later repainted at Waterville received the conventional ST to the right of the logo on both sides.

Yes, I meant the 643. I typed it in a hurry. Plus I think now it was Tuesday that I saw it. It's tough getting old :(
