The ultimate fate of the Newark Bay Wreck GP7s

Discussion of the CNJ (aka the Jersey Central) and predecessors Elizabethtown and Somerville, and Somerville and Easton, for the period 1831 to its inclusion in ConRail in 1976. The historical society site is here: http://www.jcrhs.org/

The ultimate fate of the Newark Bay Wreck GP7s

I enjoy re-visiting this topic from time to time, and most recently, I considered the fate of these two units after they were pulled from Newark Bay, rebuilt, and put back in service. It seems a bit unfortunate that both of them are apparently long gone and that no organization made efforts to save one for its historical significance.

The details are a bit murky, but I have confirmed that one of the 2 units met its end at Naporano in Newark, NJ in early 1984 after sitting on a deadline in Altoona for about 3 years. CNJ 1532, which retained its original number after the wreck rebuild, became Conrail 5679.

CNJ 1526, which was renumbered 1531 after its rebuild, became Conrail 5678. The last evidence I can find of this unit is from 1983 in a photo in Elizabethport. After that, she seems to drop off the face of the earth.

So my question, and the task for all of you out there, is how did CR 5678 (ex CNJ 1531, nee CNJ 1526) finally meet her end, and when and where did it occur?

After a bit of research I found an answer to your question. Conrail 5678, ex-CNJ 5631, was retired August 8, 1984. It was sold to Naporano Iron & Metal on June 22, 1985, presumably for parts and scrap. See Extra 2200 South issue #83 page 11.
