India gets into high-speed rail

Prime ministers launch construction of India’s first high-speed line: Narendra Modi of India and Shinzo Abe of Japan. They laid a foundation stone in Ahmedabad, starting construction on a 508-km line to Mumbai (316 mi). Its top speed will be 320 km/s, and it will reduce the travel time between the two cities from 7 hours to a 2h 7m.
The line will be elevated for 92% of its length, with 460.3km of viaducts and 12.9km of embankments and cuttings. The project includes the construction of India’s longest tunnel, which will be 21km long, as well as a 7km undersea tunnel at Thane Creek. The line will serve 12 stations including Bandra Kurla, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapl, Billmora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

They are expecting it to be done in 2023, though it could be done as early as August 15 2022, the 75th anniversary of India's independence.

The line will run along India's west coast near Pakistan. Some other lines have been proposed, like an east-west line across northern India and some lines in southern India.
